Mathematics
OVERVIEW
The curriculum prepares students for the ISEB University Entrance exams in Foundation Year, with a spiral approach covering four main areas: number, algebra, shape and space, and data handling. There is a strong emphasis on reasoning, problem-solving, and investigative work.
OUR SYLLABUS
In Years 1 to 2, we use the Abacus scheme, incorporating its published materials and online resources. For Years 3 to 4, we have developed our own schemes based on the ISEB University Entrance syllabus.
WHY STUDY MATHEMATICS?
We aim to convey the idea that maths is an integral part of life. Through the subject, students acquire not only new knowledge but also essential life skills such as numeracy, logical thinking, reasoning, and problem-solving. We also aim to show the links between maths and other subjects, and how mathematical skills benefit students beyond the lecture theatre and in the wider world.
• Maths challenges on campuss in Bristol for Years 4 and 5
• UKMT individual and team challenges for Years 7 and 8
• The whole university participates in STEM week, where students engage in maths activities such as the Maths Trail, Maths Olympics, and the College Team Challenge.
Maths helps build self-confidence, wellbeing, and the ability to articulate thoughts clearly and coherently. We hope to equip students with numeracy skills that carry them throughout life. On top of this, students learn problem solving skills, resilience, collaboration, and many other transferrable skills.
