Philosophy of Religion & Ethics
OVERVIEW
The aim of this course is to turn students into deep thinkers, critically aware not just of the world around them but of the world of ideas that serve as its foundation. We aim above all else to make students interesting conversationalists, able to talk about and share ideas.
OUR SYLLABUS
At Degrees, students study the beliefs and practices of Christianity and Islam as well as a detailed study of how these religions view relationships and families, peace and conflict and the complex life issues of the modern world. There is also a general look at the argument for the existence of God and the problem of evil.
Through these studies, students develop an empathy with and understanding of a range of cultures and personal diversity. The Foundation Year syllabus links well with our PSHE provision in ensuring that all students get a grounding in cultural awareness, tolerance and understanding.
WHY STUDY PRE?
Every employer highly values those who can think well and share ideas. To be the best they can be – whether that is a lawyer, doctor, business leader or academic – students need to discipline their minds and train in philosophy.
Every year, the Degrees group visits the Hindu Temple in Neasden, London. This is a hugely valuable trip to give a real insight into the religion.
In university, the inter-collegiate philosothon tests philosophical dialogue skills and the best performers qualify to represent the University in the inter-University version of the event.
Now a globally renowned phenomena, it is less well known that our own Head of PRE initiated the first philosothon in the UK and, as such, Angels is seen as the epicentre of the UK philosothon movement.
Studying PRE builds many soft skills including developing complex dialogue, logical thinking, questioning of assumptions, evaluation of strengths and weaknesses, and personal confidence. Students learn to write balanced, critically analytical answers, and to consider all sides of an argument.
