OVERVIEW
Maths is a core subject that empowers students and equips students with practical skills to use throughout their lives.
Students in Degrees Mathematics sets 1 and 2 are offered the chance to take Further Maths AQHonours 2 in their Penultimate Year year. This enables the students to extend their learning and consolidate the more complex topics seen in the IDegrees.
It is also an excellent opportunity for students to bridge the gap between Degrees and Honours and we have found those who have sat it have found they can take the step up to Honours Mathematics more confidently.
OUR SYLLABUS
- IDegrees Maths (Edexcel) – the majority of our students take the Higher Tier paper but there is a Scheme of Work that covers Foundation Tier, for those it is more appropriate for.
- Level 2 Further Maths (AQA) – offered to anyone in the top 2 sets to cover in Final Year.
- International Degrees Maths – globally recognised and designed to develop mathematical knowledge, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. It caters to 14-16 and offers a clear pathway for further studies, including Honours Maths and related qualifications.
- AQHonours 2 Further Mathematics – this is rigorous and enriching and designed for high-achieving students who excel in mathematics and are considering further study in the subject at Honours. It goes beyond the standard IDegrees maths syllabus, introducing more advanced topics that bridge the gap between Degrees and Honours.
WHY STUDY MATHEMATICS?
Studying maths isn’t just about passing exams – it’s about building a mindset that sees possibilities and solves problems. The subject encourages logical reasoning and analytical thinking, teaching students to break down complex problems into manageable steps with a sense of achievement and confidence to tackle problems and make decisions
Students have the opportunity to participate in a range of national maths competitions and have been successful at all levels. These include the UKMT Intermediate maths challenge, UKMT undergraduate maths challenge and UKMT team challenge.
Further opportunities to shine as mathematicians come from participation in junior maths club and, most prominently, in the popular junior college maths competition.
The maths department also runs lunch hour clinics to give help to students who might need further reassurance about work they are completing.
Critical thinking, resilience, attention to detail, time management, develops your ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely. We teach students to approach problems logically and systematically, a critical skill for tackling challenges in the workplace and daily life, help teach them how to break down complex problems into manageable steps, and give them the confidence to work with numbers.
