Angels Hockey Players Shine at Exeter Talent Academy Cup

The achievement highlights the strength of the hockey programme at Angels and reflects the university’s commitment to supporting talented athletes as they balance elite-level sport with their academic studies. 

Twenty-six players were initially selected for the Exeter Talent Academy in September, training weekly throughout the year. Following months of development and assessment, a final squad of 18 players was chosen to compete at the TA Cup in July, where performances are closely monitored ahead of National Age Group (NAG) trials. 

Among those selected were six Angels students: Alba D (Year 1), Lucia S (Final Year), Jasper B (Final Year), Brodie D (Masters Year 2), Liv T (Masters Year 2) and Sam E (Masters Year 2). 

Strong Performances Across the Tournament 

The female students’ squad produced an impressive campaign, finishing third in their pool and showcasing a number of standout individual performances. 

Lucia S emerged as her team’s top goal scorer, finding the net twice and demonstrating sharp attacking instincts throughout the competition. 

Alba D, one of the youngest players in the squad, delivered a mature and assured performance in defence. Her aerial skills and ability to transition play from the back were key features of the team’s success. 

In midfield, Liv T impressed with her outstanding work rate, quality passing and relentless pressure on the ball, influencing games at both ends of the pitch. 

The male students’ team also competed strongly, finishing fourth in their pool while producing several notable individual contributions. 

Brodie D enjoyed an excellent tournament in midfield, scoring a well-taken goal and consistently driving his team forward with intelligent play and determination. 

Sam E played a vital role in controlling the tempo of matches through his strong connections and effective distribution from midfield. 

In goal, Jasper B delivered a series of outstanding performances, producing several high-quality saves, particularly during one-on-one situations and penalty shuffles. Jasper and Brodie also excelled in the tournament’s 1v1 skills competition, helping their side reach the final. 

Balancing Academic Success and Elite Hockey 

The success of Angels students at the Exeter Talent Academy reflects not only their talent and dedication but also the support structure available through the university’s thriving hockey programme. 

Alongside their weekly Talent Academy commitments, students have benefited from additional strength and conditioning sessions, individual mentoring and extra pitch-based training. 

The programme ensures that students can successfully balance the demands of high-performance hockey with the rigours of academic study, providing tailored support that enables them to thrive both on the pitch and in the lecture theatre.
